Kurt Bess dealt Anthony Augustin a crunching left hook that deposited him to the canvass for the full count when the two squared off in a return bout in the ProAm boxing cards Friday evening last.
At the pre-fight press conference, Bess had promised to avenge the loss to Augustin in the sixth edition of the programme. The latter fighter had scoffed at the remark and assured Bess that he (Augustin) would have registered his second victory on the trot.
This was not to be, however, as a trim, mean looking Bess wasted little time and in 2:35secs of the first frame had reduced Augustin to a crawling pitiful spectacle that needed the assistance of the referee to re-assume an upright position.
Edmond Declou and Winston Pompey started the night’s proceedings with an action packed middleweight encounter that ended in a drawn decision while Veronica Blackman out-muscled Pauline London to win their women’s heavyweight bout. In the second bout of the night, Jermain King was absolutely no match for Mark Austin and dropped a lopsided majority verdict in their catchweight match.
Indeed, Bess, an unassuming boxer, has sent up his ratings pretty high after the knockout victory coming close on the heels of a unanimous verdict over local heavyweight champion, Mitchell Rogers.
Really, Augustin stood no chance as the lanky Bess attacked from the onset with some telling punches. Bess’ killer blow was launched simultaneously with a timid right hand thrown by Augustin.
While Augustin’s sailed over his shoulders, Bess’ slammed into the stocky heavyweight. Augustin’s knees buckled and he toppled to the canvass where he remained for the entire count. The punch was so quick and powerful that Augustin never knew what hit him and is probably still pondering.
DeClou could consider himself unlucky after launching the most spirited attack that had Pompey in reverse mode for the most part of the bout. The latter fighter did connect on a few occasions but a dancing DeClou minimized the full effects of the blows, countering with pinpoint accuracy. The decision was greeted by mild surprise from a section of the crowd.
Austin was a shadow of himself. He loaded up his punches and his timings were terribly off. However, what he lacked in these departments he made up in determination. Luckily for him, King was nowhere in his class and seemed content to hang on to the final bell.
London, who had earlier mouthed off, failed to live up to the pre-fight hype. To her credit, she did manage to whittle her weight to an acceptable 189lbs, ten less than in her bout against Debbie Tyson last July and thirty-one less than in the Sharon Ward bout in May when she tipped the scales at 220lbs. Both fighters looked sluggish but in the end Blackman prevailed.
The next ProAm card is slated for February 25.
