Dear Editor,
A lot has been said about who would be the best person to be the PPP presidential candidate.
This must be seen against the background of a changing world while holding onto the values for which the Party and its supporters stand.
There is no doubt that the PPP has lost its way and its identity over the years, mainly due to the leadership or lack of leadership of those in charge at Freedom House.
The best example of the lack of leadership is the treatment meted out to GAWU for its support of workers it represents.
This is the union which had as its honorary president, the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan. It took an angry outburst from Moses Nagamoottoo on the issue before the would-be presidential candidate Mr. Donald Ramotar opened his mouth.
Mr. Robert Persaud said nothing until his President spoke on the issue. This leaves people to wonder as to whether the threat to de-recognise the union did not come from the President himself.
Mr. Navin Chandrapal’s defence of the union seems to have angered the President. A letter from one Jackson seems to be threatening Navin with expulsion from the Party.
This letter appeared only in the Chronicle so you have to assume that this is a poor attempt to stop Navin from moving forward to join the race for President.
Mr. Editor, Mr. Chandrapal is educated and intelligent. Just look at the letters penned by him compared with those who have attacked him. He has been at the forefront when it comes to do with anything concerning the climate change debate.
The President is fully aware of this. To add to his credentials, it is no secret that he gets on well with labour and will be able to negotiate properly with any union. Among the Party’s rank and file, nobody in the PPP commands more support than Mr. Chandrapal. So, the risk of expulsion is out of the question. To do so, would be to relegate the PPP to the benches of the opposition.
Perhaps, Mr. Chandarpal’s greatest asset is his ability to motivate young people from all walks of life. You need this group to vote for you if you are to win the upcoming election.
Mr. Editor, the ongoing battle for leadership in the PPP is one for the heart and soul of the Party as well as to put this country back on track to development where all Guyanese can earn a decent living and be able to participate in an equal manner when it comes to opportunities in Guyana.
