A 39-year old man had his left foot almost severed by a bullet after he challenged an off duty policeman during a heated rage yesterday afternoon.
Cranston Lopes, of 2934 North Ruimveldt, who is said to be of unsound mind, was shot below his left knee, after threatening his elderly mother and another relative.
He is presently receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was rushed shortly before 15:00 hours in a police vehicle.
An acquaintance of the injured man told this newspaper that Lopes was in the habit of threatening his relatives whenever “his sickness raises”. Yesterday was no different.
According to reports, lopes who recently moved to Sophia, visited his mother’s home in North Ruimveldt and created a scene, causing his mother and other occupants to become afraid.
An eyewitness said that Lopes was carrying a knife which he was brandishing threateningly.
The cop, who reportedly lives nearby, saw what was happening and confronted the man who instead of desisting from his behaviour, challenged the police causing him to discharge a round from a .32 calibre weapon.
Lopes fell to the ground writhing in pain until a police patrol vehicle rushed him to the hospital.
“If that man (policeman) didn’t shoot he, he might’a de kill all dem people,” an eyewitness told this newspaper.
A relative of the wounded man, who accompanied him to the hospital, related that she was not around when the shooting took place but was told that a policeman had shot Lopes.
“He (Lopes) talking all kind of things. Like he tripping out again. He always trip out,” the woman said.
It is not too clear if Lopes will lose his foot which appears to be in a bad shape with the bone protruding from the flesh.
