The first story you are about to read here on a rum-shop man whom the Leviathan shamelessly elevated in the education sector is true. This was one of the most nauseating aspects of the Leviathan’s politics that I think puts him below all other Caribbean Heads since Self-Government in the fifties.
The identification of this man for one of the most crucial positions in Guyana’s educational system is an act of destruction that no Guyanese president or Prime Minister in the past would ever have contemplated, much less do.
There was once a well patronized Chinese restaurant on Sheriff Street. It was there one evening, that gunmen ran in and robbed a current Minster of the Government who became infamous about eighteen months ago. This Cabinet member told the press, in a statement that was later broadcast to the nation, that when he heard a Minister was being accused of committing illegal acts he thought he was the person being referred to since he is a man given to doing these kinds of illegal things.
Anyway, one night an accident occurred right outside of Double Happiness. A car drove into a cyclist and knocked him into the air
There were two occupants in that vehicle. Both were UG lecturers. One of them was known to be sailing close to alcoholism. Both were drunk. The police took them to the Kitty Police Station.
I turned up and the officer in charge ordered me out of the Kitty police compound. I knew the young man very well. He was an employee at that time, of the present Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board, Anand Sanasie. Anyone who wants to know about what happened to this man can verify the facts with Mr. Sanasie.
The Georgetown Public Hospital didn’t have the steel that was required for his operation. I secured steel from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. This accident victim has a permanent limp and currently works at GWI which at that time was located opposite Mr. Sanasie’s house in Kingston.
Known throughout the University of Guyana as being a fixture on the rum-shop scene, the Leviathan made sure that he put this man in a top position in tertiary education. He remained there for eight years. He came to work at 11:00 hours and left at 13:00 hours. We all knew where he went when he left UG. He has never performed while at UG. He remains a favourite of the Leviathan.
It has to be nothing but a pure joke when the Leviathan can speak about certain PPP leaders being in the rum-shop. Here is another story told to me by a former driver at the Guyana Rice Producers’ Association, who is also a friend.
Around midnight, this Minister, known to be an alcoholic and known to be protected by the Leviathan, turned up at a rum-shop in East Berbice. The owner was a party man and he allowed him in because he requested something to eat. His driver shared a meal too. In an inebriated state as he usually is, he began to touch the owner’s live-in maid who served the food. The man insisted that he shouldn’t do that but he persisted.
His driver then intervened and received a fist in his face. He retaliated with a slap and went outside and waited by the car. “Killaman” came onto the road, went into his car and opened the glove compartment. He was reaching for his gun. My friend said he ran fast without looking back.
When he was calm, he found himself at the New Amsterdam stelling. Laughingly he said to me; “Freddie I don’t know how I reached the stelling.” Mr. “Killaman” has since acquired a reputation for pulling his gun. “Killaman” is a permanent rum-shop dweller. Amazingly, with all the sordid tales about this gentleman, the Leviathan has not seen it morally fit to do the right thing and send Killaman home.
There is a rum-shop in Station Street, Kitty. There you can find the Cabinet. I know one Minister (met him at UG) who goes to this watering hole every day. If you want to see this guy, don’t go to his office but to Station Street.
How can the Leviathan accuse any PPP leader of being a constant inhabitant of the rum-shop? There may be PPP leaders who frequent the liquor restaurants, but if they are not in the Cabinet then that shouldn’t be a problem. But when they are Ministers, then the Leviathan has a moral obligation to the nation to send them for rehabilitation treatment. He never does. I wonder why?
