Three students of the Ketley Primary School were, on Thursday, injured after an “old shed” in the school’s compound collapsed upon them. The incident occurred around 12:15 hours.
Three students identified as Samuel Smith, Cordell Hyles and Tryease (last name unknown), were rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
This newspaper understands that the children were playing under the shed when it collapsed. Tryease sustained the worst injuries. The child’s head immediately became swollen in different places. The nine-year-old Tryease also sustained injuries to his chest.
He bore several abrasions about his body. Smith sustained a “deep” wound in his head. Hyles also sustained injuries to his head.
According to a parent who accompanied her child to the hospital, the shed has been an issue in Parent Teacher Meetings for some time.
However nothing was ever done to address the matter. The woman lamented that had the situation been taken seriously her child would not have been injured.
The concerned parent said that she fears that one of the other children may have sustained internal injuries since he was pinned by the shed for quite a few seconds before students and teachers came to his rescue.
This newspaper understands that the school’s canteen is situated close to where the shed was mounted.
Sources say that the shed had no support but “four shaky legs”.
Efforts to contact the school administration were futile since the gate was padlocked.
