Gone are the days when persons enter Guyana for a weekend stay and are deterred from being able to drive around the country because of the fact that they weren’t able to access a permit in time.
In an effort to cater to such needs, Manniram Prashad, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce yesterday officially launched the issuing of driver’s permit for passengers entering into “our beautiful Guyana”.
In a simple ceremony, the Minister unveiled a sign in the arrival hall of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) at Timehri, which is intended to alert visitors that the service is available.
Joining Minister Prashad at the ceremony, which essentially launch a public awareness campaign, were Chief Executive Officer of the CJIA, Mr. Ramesh Ghir; Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh; and representatives of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Explaining the simple procedure, Minister Prashad said that a visitor just has to present his/her driver’s licence from their country of origin; fill out an application form; and depending on the class of vehicle that person is allowed to drive in their country, a permit will be issued for a similar licence in Guyana.
The minister said that the sign is the first of the many that will be mounted at numerous parts of the airport. According to him, the new process is being implemented as a preliminary developmental step for Guyana’s tourism industry because lots of persons have been enquiring about obtaining driver’s permits at the point of entry.
According to Prashad, the process is “hassle-free” and the service will be accessible once flights are in operation. He informed that the permit will be valid for one month and is renewable up to three months.
Prashad said that the new procedure would be especially beneficial for persons coming into the country for just a weekend or a brief visit.
He disclosed that the service will also be available at the Ogle International Airport, and they are looking at how the facility can be implemented at the Moleson Creek and Takutu Bridge crossings.
According to the minister, the issuing of driver’s permits for visitors would be disseminated both locally and internationally including to foreign missions, the Caribbean Tourism Organization, hotels, resorts, tour operators and other stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality industry.
Before this implementation, tourist coming into the country would have gone to the Guyana Revenue Authority’s office to get a driver’s permit. However that system has been said to be inadequate because of the long lines and the hassle visitors had to go through in order access a permit.
The minister said that he anticipates that car rentals in the area will “mushroom” as a result.
