A woman who is described as a ‘con lady’ allegedly visited ‘The Market Place’ grocery establishment located at 97 Fifth Street, Industry, East Bank Demerara, on Monday and ordered a quantity of groceries worth thousands of dollars before making good her escape.
According to the proprietor who only gave her name as Marissa, on Monday, around midmorning a woman entered her shop and requested a carton of cigarettes. The proprietor explained that she told the woman to return the next day when the quantity of cigarettes she ordered will be available.
After spending some time wandering aimlessly in the store the woman left.
On Tuesday, as Marissa opened her store for normal business, the woman returned and ordered several tins of milk, rice, one bag of garlic, two cartoon cigarettes. After being served with the items, the woman was overheard talking to someone on her cellular phone making arrangement for the person to come with the money to pay the bill.
Marissa added that after some time had elapsed, and the person failed to turn up, the woman requested that an employee of the store accompany her in a taxi to collect the money.
All that time not realizing that something was amiss, the young woman who is still in a state of shock, related that she also operates a taxi service at her grocery store. She added that from time to time customers would call and order items and upon delivery the bills are usually paid.
The unidentified con-woman was allowed to go promising to return the money with the taxi operator.
Kaieteur News spoke to the driver of the car that transported the woman and he said that the woman sat at the back seat of his car and requested to be taken to Cummings Lodge. He said that as he neared the village she instructed him to take her on the Line Top.
When he approached the corner past Graham’s Hall Primary School the woman got on her phone and told the person on the other side of the line that “she was coming home”. “The woman asked me to stop and starting talking on her cell phone and she asked the person if he was next to the shop… then she said ok, then you pay Marissa and I going home” with that she paid the driver for the drop and assured him that her husband had already pay the bill.
She then request that the driver put her out at an approaching corner, the driver even assisted her with the bag from his car trunk.
It was not until he returned to the store that his boss told him that no money was given to her. Marissa told this publication that she and her husband recently opened the store and that it is very shocking to know that you trust persons who turn out to be con-artists.”
She related that the woman who conned her is of medium built and was sporting a gold nose ring.
And in the wake of yesterday’s article captioned “Female scam artist caught on camera” the proprietor of ‘The Market Place’ alleged that the image shown is that of the woman who robbed her.
The matter has since been reported to Brickdam Police Station.
