The Chinese Embassy last evening celebrated the Chinese New Year with a grand cultural presentation comprised of beautiful dances, songs and Kung Fu displays that reflect the Chinese culture.
The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month. The Chinese are celebrating the “Year of the Rabbit.”
The function was attended by President Bharrat Jagdeo, and several other government officials as well as a number of dignitaries, diplomats, the mayor, ambassadors and special invitees.
In delivering his New Year’s message, Chinese Ambassador, Yu Wenzhe, said the Chinese people wherever they are will always try to go back home to share that love and joy with their loved ones.
The year 2010 was a very encouraging and extraordinary one for the Chinese people in the world, while they overcame lots of natural disasters.
And a successful launching of a lunar probe shows China’s progress in the field of science and technology, and it has experienced rapid economic development and achieved success in improving the people’s living standard.
He noted that now China’s economy is now the second largest economy in the world, while contributing over 20 per cent to the world economic growth, this was possible by Chinese hard work.
The achievements would not have been possible without the support and assistance of overseas Chinese and the foreign friends including the Government and the people of Guyana.
He said the friendship between China and Guyana has a great history, making it a culture and a part of Guyana.
“Guyana is the first Caribbean country to establish diplomatic relations with China. Since then China and Guyana have maintained a friendship and close cooperation which in turn has brought concrete resolve and tangible benefits for our two peoples,” the Chinese Ambassador said.
A number of giveaways and presentations were part of the event.
