Fudadin named Captain
By Sean Devers
Essequibo fast bowler Rensford Beaton is the only player without First-Class experience in a Guyana 13-man Guyana squad to face host Jamaica in the opening round of the 2011 Regional four-day cricket competition from February 4.
The teenage pacer made his regional under-19 debut in 2009 but lost his place in the team for last year’s competition. He is genuinely quick and could share the new ball with Test pacer Brandon Bess while the experienced Esuan Crandon is the other pacer in the squad which will have its first practice session today from 12:30hrs at Bourda.
West Indies ‘A’ left-hander Assad Fudadin will captain the young side which will be without the services of Test pair Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shiv Chanderpaul due to World Cup duties with the West Indies team.
Opener Sewnarine Chattergoon and fellow left-hander Narsingh Deonarine are the batsmen in the squad with Test experience while there is no room for the out-of form Travis Dowlin who played at the Test level against South Africa last year.
Former West Indies U-19 Captain Leon Johnson, who played 3 ODIs for the West Indies in 2008, and opener Shemroy Barrington, returns to the side.
Rajendra Chandrika, who played for the HPC team in the last Regional 50-overs competition in Jamaica last year, has also been selected. Royston Crandon, who played his solitary ODI for the West Indies against India in South Africa in 2009, is also in the side.
Derwin Christian who scored a First-Class century against Jamaica and is regarded as the best ‘Keeper in Guyana has gotten the nod over Anthony Bramble who replaced him for the last 50-over tournament.
Davendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul, both West Indies ‘A’ team players will carry the spin attack.
There is no room in the touring squad for West Indies under-19 pacer Keon Joseph who made his First-Class debut against the Windward Islands in Grenada last year or National under-19 left-arm pacer Andre Stoll who was a member of this year’s T20 team.
Former West Indies Captain Steven Jacobs, a member of the T20 team, loses his place in the First-Class team while Vishaul Singh, who played 2 matches in last year’s 4-day competition, also loses his place in the team.
Off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed and all-rounder Chris Barnwell, who also played two matches each in last year’s tournament, have failed to regain their places in the side.
