An exciting encounter is envisaged when Conquerors FC face off with Pele FC for championship honours when the finals of the Western Tigers Super 8 football tournament concludes at the Georgetown Football Club ground this Sunday January 30.
The two teams earned the right to contest for the top prize by dint of respective victories over the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Western Tigers FC respectively when semifinals action concluded at the same venue Sunday evening last.
Playing in the first match of the double header, Conquerors mauled the GDF 5-2 moments before Pele disposed of the Tigers by a 5-0 margin. Vurlon Mills netted four times for Conquerors, in the 14th, 57th, 58th and 77th minutes, while his teammate, Cornell Shultz stitched in a 42nd minute humdinger. Hubert Pedro pulled one back for the Army in the 26th minute while Shawn Arthur contributed in the 87th min. It proved to be too little too late.
The Pele/Western Tigers match started at a furious clip with both sides attacking energetically. Great work by Pele’s strikers saw them consistently occupying space in the ‘Tigers’ half. They were, however, unable to capitalize on several loose plays by the West Ruimveldt based team.
Kudos is also in order for young goalie, Dereck Carter whose goalkeeping prowess was responsible for several failed attempts by the charging Pele forwards. As the battle intensified it appeared as though the contest would have evolved into a second half battle when, in 36th minute Christopher Williams inadvertently kicked the ball past Carter to register a defence error and send Pele 1 goal up.
No further goals were scored in this segment but in the second stanza Kerwyn Benjamin sent his team closer to the finals with a dolly in the 55th minute. Three minutes later, in the 58th minute, Dirk Archer nailed the ‘Tigers’ custodian to make it 3-0 for Pele.
Matters got worst when Daniel Wilson left the Tigers goalie stranded and his teammates ecstatic after a fierce shot in the 71st minute found the back of the net. Marvin Joseph then heaped more misery on the Tigers with an 84th minute beauty that sealed the issue for Pele.
Meanwhile, Western Tigers and the GDF are scheduled to meet on Sunday in the third place playoff. The champion team receives $500,000 while the second place finishers net $200,000. The winner of the Tigers/GDF shindig claims $150,000. Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
