Merely three days before the respective fighters grace the ring for this year’s inaugural ProAm boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool is optimistic that activities would reach its peak this year.
Speaking from his Avenue of the Republic office, Mr. Abdool said that plans are in train to add an international flavour to the card in continuation of last year’s objectives. Barbadian based Guyanese fighters Miguel Antoine and Shawn Cox, who have both comprised earlier cards, will also be regular features as the GBBC boss attempts to provide qualitative activities for local pugilists and top class fights for boxing enthusiasts to enjoy.
Cox had defeated Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes in a thrilling encounter while Antoine had prevailed over Shawn Pyle in a lopsided match up last year. While Abdool has refrained from naming possible opponents for the two Barbadian based Guyanese, fans have been calling for a possible match between Mark Austin and Antoine; this after the former fighter defeated Pyle even as he was preparing for a crack at Antoine’s Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) title.
The Barbadian based Guyanese was later stripped of his title after he failed to make a mandatory defence. His manager, Sam Layne had cited unavailability of opponents as the reason for his charge’s inability to defend the title. Now that Austin has raised his hand after securing a draw against Moore, the possibility of an Antoine/Austin battle is highly possible.
There is also the possibility that the aborted fight between Cox and a Venezuelan may yet materialize. Insufficient time to complete
negotiations had stymied the efforts of the promoters last year and the bout was eventually called off.
Friday night’s card is anticipated to be action packed and Mr. Abdool is urging all and sundry to trudge to the venue to witness pure local talent on show.
Kurt Best, the man that defeated local heavyweight champion, Mitchell Rogers, will match gloves with Anthony Augustin in a heavyweight scrap while Veronica Blackman and Pauline London will go after each other, also in the heavyweight division. Winston Pompey will attempt to make amends for the lopsided loss to Rawle Frank when he opposes Lindener, Edmond DeClou while Mark Austin would resume his quest for honours when he comes up against Jermaine King.
The boxers are currently rounding off sessions at their respective gyms. London, Bess, Austin and Augustin operates out of the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym, Albouystown under the tutelage of Lennox Daniels and George Oprecht, while Joseph Murray and Sebert Blake are preparing Blackman and Jermaine King over at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) boxing gym.
Meanwhile, the fighters will convene at the National Communications Network at 13:00hrs today for the customary press conference.
The public is invited to tune in for the broadcast which has always been insightful as the boxers divulge their objectives for their career and plans for their immediate bouts.
October 1st turn off your lights to bring about a change!
