Dear Editor,
As an Amerindian, I personally feel that the move the President made in respect to being paid by the Developed Nations like Norway to preserve our forests is a good one for the simple reason that most life forms depend on the forest one way or another for existence.
Developed and some developing countries have consumed most of theirs during the process of development and now realise that their very existence depends on countries that still have their forest intact.
Amerindians stand to benefit from forests payouts and I think this is the reason that most village Councils supported the initiative at the recently held conference.
I believe that village Councils that cannot make up their minds as yet on the issue are suspicious because they cannot understand how one can preserve the forest and still have activities like logging, mining and slash and burn agriculture being allowed by the government.
Mr. Editor my main concern here is whether all Amerindians including those living out of Amerindian territories are entitled to equal or like benefits from the initiative. It seems to me as though only Amerindians living in Amerindian communities are recognised by the Administration when benefits are handed out and Budgets made by the Amerindian Ministry.
If Amerindians living out of titled lands are not included in benefits earmarked for Amerindians. This would suggest there are two categories of Amerindians in Guyana and only those in the first category are recognised by all stakeholders in the Low Carbon Deal.
I recently read in the Media that it is the intention of the Amerindian Affairs Ministry to equip all Amerindian homes with solar panel. I would like the Ministry to say if indeed all Amerindian homes will get one. In non Amerindian communities this can ease the burden of paying light bills.
