Several businesses on board as over 60 horses entered to date
By Samuel Whyte
This year’s season opening horserace action plans to be the best of its kind in recent history.
That’s the word out of the principals of The Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club (RCMTC), where the first horserace meet for the new season is slated to be held on Sunday January 30 at Club’s entity situated at Alness Village, Corentyne Berbice, as they raise the bar in their effort to lift the sport.
According to the organizers, “…this is the first race of the year and it is obvious that we must set a standard for the others to better”.
One organizer stated that with the lack of proper input from the Guyana Horse Racing Authority, the onus is on the clubs to make a concerted effort to raise the standards and do all in their powers to bring the sport to what it was in the glory days.
Entries were expected to close yesterday and already over 60 of the Country’s top racehorses have already had their name inked to be a part of the opening act.
Seven races are listed to be competed on the day’s card with over $3.5 million in cash and prizes up for grabs in the one day sprint meet. A number of newly imported horses will be taking to the track in Guyana for the first time.
With the Alness race track undoubtedly the fastest and the best in the country, horse race fans cannot ask for a better opening act.
The D Class match up highlights the day’s activity which includes four other feature events the F and Lower, the 3yr old Guyana Bred contest, the G and H class gallops.
All of the event are 1100M or 1200M races and is expected to bring the best sprinters in the country in action.
The D Class race is sponsored by Banks DIH Limited to the tune of over $ 600,000 and has a winning purse of $ 350,000 and the Banks DIH Trophy over 1100M.
The F and lower race has winning money of $240,000 and will also be an 1100M affair. The animals running in the 3yr old Guyana and West Indies Bred contest event, will be competing for first prize of $200,000 over 1200M.
The horse crossing the line first in the G class event will also run away with $200,000 in another 1100M race.
The H class competitors will battle for a winning purse of $150,000 over 1200M.
There is a race for I2 and lower horses which has a winning purse of $120,000 and will be competed over 1200M.
The other race listed on the day’s programme is for Division 1 and Divisions 2 and 3 horses where the winner will collect $100,000 over 1100M.
Race time is 13:00hrs and according to the organizers a lot of out of season preparation was done to the facilities including the track which is in excellent condition and all is ready for a grand day at the races.
Outstanding individual performers including top Jockey, trainer and stable will be presented with accolades compliments of the Trophy Stall Bourda Market and the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club.
