– after capturing wanted man
The capture of a wanted man by police in the Rupununi has led to the gruesome discovery of a shallow grave containing the body of a Brazilian national who was reportedly murdered last Friday.
The wanted man, whose name was given as Wycliff Smith, 26, of Moco Moco, Rupununi was captured at a party in the village on Saturday night and has reportedly confessed to murdering the Brazilian near a marijuana field in a remote area in the district.
The incident might have gone unnoticed had it not been for another Brazilian who managed to escape and report the matter to the Village Captain hours after the killing.
According to reports, Smith has been eluding capture by the police for a long time, with several warrants out for his arrest.
He was fingered in drug trafficking and other crimes and was considered dangerous.
This newspaper has learnt that the Brazilian was shot dead on Friday afternoon in the Moco Moco Creek area, apparently over a marijuana deal that went sour.
He was then buried in a shallow grave. Police are yet to locate the murder weapon.
However, one of the Brazilian’s countrymen fled the scene and reported what had happened to the Captain of Moco Moco village.
But it was not until the following day that Smith was located.
Kaieteur News was told that the Village Captain got a tip that the suspect was in a party in the village and the police were contacted.
According to reports, the Village Captain along with another Rural Constable went into the party and located Smith, while armed police surrounded the venue to prevent any attempt at an escape.
The Village Captain managed to subdue him and the police subsequently moved in and arrested him.
According to reports, during interrogation, the man admitted to killing the Brazilian, who is so far unidentified.
This caused the police to travel to the area with a view to locating the grave.
While travelling to the location, the police arrested two other Brazilian nationals who were in possession of a quantity of marijuana.
It was they who took the police to the spot where they located the shallow grave.
The search party, which included several police ranks along with the Village Captain, dug up the grave and recovered the Brazilian’s decomposing body, which was then taken to the Lethem mortuary. The victim was reportedly shot in the chest.
Residents of Rupununi are loud in praise for the police for capturing the wanted suspect, whom many had feared.
The residents claimed that it was the first time in years that the police at Lethem have managed to crack a murder in the area.
