– Sevens TD supports Coach’s views
Despite being weakened by the absence of four key players, Head Coach of the national rugby squad Theodore Henry believes that the team will still put up a good performance when they participate in the IRB World Series in Las Vegas, USA next month.
Guyana, who will be missing Kevin McKenzie, Albert LaRose and Dwayne Schroeder due to suspension and Richard Staglon, who indicated to the Union that he is unavailable is placed in a group that includes current leaders in the Series England, France and Argentina.
Commenting on the team’s preparations which continued at the National Stadium on Saturday, Henry said that they’ve been decreasing the amount of errors made and was increasingly getting better.
“The errors made last week were corrected in terms of game plan and the general pattern and I think we are on target except for a few small areas. The time passing, our general support in offence and defence, our alignment and assisting each other have improved and I’m quite satisfied with the intensity as well,” Henry noted.
He said the performance of the sweepers Ryan Gonsalves and Leon Greaves was commendable adding that their tackle count was excellent.
He revealed that some of the areas that a lot of emphasis will be placed on this week are kicking conversions, tactical kicking and restarts.
Henry indicated that moving forward the focus will shift to game simulations and tightening up some of the areas of weakness.
Technical Director of Sevens Mike McCormack in expressing his views on the way the preparations have gone so far was in accord with the Coach, adding that last Saturday’s sessions saw the level of intensity raised.
“That was a real challenge for us to get the guys to raise their intensity, especially training at the National Park which is still not conducive for top level preparations, but they’ve responded very well,” McCormack felt.
McCormack pointed to another problem that they’ve been facing and that is the challenge to get the guys to play to a pattern rather than the opposition in the simulation games.
“It goes back to the fact that we are playing at the international level, but with limited infrastructure and resources and that is posing a real problem for us. In the World Series you do not get full chances, you really get only a half of a chance and you’ve got to be able to fully exploit it,” he mentioned.
McCormack said it was clear that the intensity is much sharper and that is a positive, but the next couple of weeks will be crucial.
He added that fortunately so far no one has been seriously injured and every player in the squad is still in contention for final selection.
