With the start of the 2011/2012 horse racing season just a mere week away, most racing Stables, owners, grooms and other connections have almost completed preparation for the start of what is expected to be an action packed time in the horseracing arena.
With more horses being imported and bred a competitive season is being anticipated and the owners are moving quickly to replenish their stocks as they don’t want to get caught on the wrong footing when the season starts. The owners are making sure that enough animals are available, in top shape and are prepared to take to the track whenever race day arrives.
A number of the stables have all moved to replenish their stocks either by imports or doing their own breeding, with most doing massive rehabilitation and adjustments to accommodate the new intakes.
With injury, death, sales, age, and some of the animals being used for breeding purposes, taking a toll on those available, the best thing is to have enough horses in stock so that enough animals will always be available to take part in races.
A Number of the owners have been pulling out all the stops as they go the distance. Horses are been imported from as far as North America and various countries in the Caribbean with USA, Trinidad and Jamaica being the main hunting grounds. A number of the stables are also now doing their own breeding, which would see more locally bred animals available.
The major stables like the Crawford, Deroop, Jagdeo, Rumours, Elcock, Robinson, Customs, Naljit, Habibulla, Jumbo jet, Jagroop, Chattergoon, Singh, and Mahaicony among others, have all been replenishing their stocks. With the sport being the richest in Guyana it is no wonder that millions are being spent by the various owners to keep on top of their game.
The Chris Jagdeo and sons Construction stables at No1 Road Corentyne Berbice is one of the entities doing massive rehabilitation and adjustments with the constructing of a brand new stable. A number of animals have arrived to join forces with those already available. According to trainer Tribuwan ‘Turbo’ Jagdeo, their aim is to keep on top of the game. “We have a long way to go in terms of reaching an acceptable standard and those of other countries, but we will do our part to help raise the standard. Some of the animals will go into racing immediately while others will be groomed for racing later,” he said.
