With the local team out of the reckoning as regards to qualifying for the CONCACAF Under-20 finals, all that is left to play for now is pride. The word from the camp is that the Guyanese will be going all out for a win over the Netherlands Antilles in this their final game.
The curtains will come down on stage-two of the CONCACAF World Under-20 qualifying at the Franklin Essed Stadium, Paramaribo Suriname this evening with the home team being the favourite to win the group and take the 12th and final spot in CONCACAF finals set for Guatemala in April, the top four teams will represent the Confederation at the FIFA Finals.
To date Suriname is comfortably placed at the top of the standings with 6 points from their two wins; Bermuda and the Netherlands Antilles are on 3 each from a win and a loss respectively with Guyana, the only team not to get off the mark and that they hope to change this afternoon.
In a spirited display, the young Guyanese lost to Suriname by the odd goal in three in their second game on Friday evening after going down to Bermuda 3-0 in their opening game on Wednesday last.
In the Bermuda game, the Junior Jaguars looked tired and off key but rebounded to score first against Suriname before two defensive blunders allowed the home team the equalizing and winning goals.
Despite the loss however, Head Coach Collie Hercules noted that the exposure will be beneficial for the players who all have bright futures ahead of them.
Zeroing in on today’s final game, Hercules said they will be going all out for victory against the Netherlands who got past Bermuda 2-1 in their second game on Friday in a scrappy encounter.
“I’ve spoken to the players and told them that we have to come out winners in this final game to give the fans and country something to be happy about.
In this game we will also seek to give a few of the players some exposure but at the same time not too many changes will be made.”
The former Guyana forward, again complimented his charges for showing great heart against Suriname and is backing them to take care of business against the Netherlands today.
The Technical staff opted to have the players rest yesterday morning with a light session in the afternoon at the game venue.
It is not quite certain who will wear the captain’s arm band as regular captain Colin Nelson gave way to goalkeeper Richie Richards for the Suriname game; Hercules said that that was a team decision.
Nelson, who has senior team experience will again be a tower of strength in defence and is expected to be re-joined by Ryan Crandon who had to sit out the Suriname clash after being booked twice against Bermuda.
Leading the charge in midfield again will be USA based Brandon Beresford who has been one of the standouts ever since joining the team, his calm style of play and energetic displays have been good assets for Guyana. Forward Telson McKinnon, who came on as a substitute in both games so far might be one of the changes up front either for Sheldon Holder or Olvis Mitchell.
Trayon Bobb who started in the last game added some life to the engine room {midfield} and is expected to hold down this spot again.
Richards will as usual start between the uprights. When the final whistle is blown after the 16:30hrs kick off the young Guyanese team will be hoping they can be celebrating a victory.
But first, they must play at least 90 minutes of solid, compact football, capitalizing on all their chances – and surely – will be celebrating victory against the Netherlands Antilles.
