Basketball action returns to the Ancient County when the Berbice Amateur Basketball Association runs off their annual Mashramani Basketball competition at the Vryman’s Erven court in New Amsterdam.
Four teams will participate in the competition namely Rose Hall Panthers, Fyrish Fire Hawks, Smythfield Rockers and the New Amsterdam Warriors.
The teams will first play each other in a round robin format with the top team opposing the other two teams in the semifinals. The top two teams will then oppose each other in the finals. The tournament will be played over 12 days with the semifinals and finals slated for the night action.
The winning teams and outstanding individuals will be presented with cash and other incentives. According to Coordinator, national junior coach Kirk Fraser, the competition will be played using FIBA rules and players are expected to adhere to the conduct of the GABF. He stated that teams are expected to be present t the venues half and hour before the start of each match.
The games will be played over four quarters of 15 minutes each.
According to Fraser the competition will be used to launch the 2011 basketball season in Berbice, while also it will be used to select an all Star Berbice team to oppose Ravens in an exhibition match on the 19th at the Vryman’s Erven venue.
Fraser said that the association hopes to have an active 2011 after having a moderate 2010.
School, junior, female and inter area tournaments along with the usual club tournaments will be played this year. “We will be looking to have more persons on the various national teams while continuing with our annual summer programmes,” Fraser said.
