– Region Nine’s, Wilson, Pedro to make national debut
By Edison Jefford
The governing organisation for athletics in Guyana, the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has named eight athletes to compete at the prestigious North America, Central American and the Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Race in Trinidad next month.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport yesterday, President of the AAG, Colin Boyce said that they are still to name the official or officials that will accompany the team. He said the association is still fine-tuning the basic elements relative to the selection of the team.
“Judging from last year when we were fifth at the NACAC race, I believe this team is capable of a much improved overall performance. I know we might not be able to win but I think we can do a lot better than the last time we competed in the race,” Boyce said.
He revealed that he is optimistic that the team will represent Guyana to the best of their abilities and if that produces a better placing overall then it means that the country is improving. The head of the AAG was confident that those selected are the best in Guyana.
Notably absent from the team was national senior distance runner, Lionel D’Andrade, who injured his ankle on the course Sunday. However, prior to the event, D’Andrade had opted out of the NACAC race stating that he is not interested in the gruelling event.
It was almost an elementary prognosis that the top finishers from the local race on Sunday would have produced the names for the team. The AAG President had indicated that Sunday’s race was the primary basis for selection on the national team. The top for finishers from the senior male race, Cleveland Forde, Dennis Horatio, Wilbert Mingo and Cleveland Thomas were all selected along with the top two finishers in the local junior male race Nathanie Giddings and Region Nine’s distance ace, Hezron Pedro.
Forde continues to be rewarded for his string of consistent performances that includes his rout of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American 10km Classic and his comfortable win on Sunday on the National Park’s outer field.
Horatio made his claim for national senior selection because of his string of consistent runs while Thomas turned the spotlight on himself when he braced the tape with Forde in an 800m race that was easily the best last year as Thomas announced his ascendency.
In the female team, veteran campaigner, Alika Morgan and the junior distance sensation, Doretta Wilson from Region Nine, have been selected along with the males to make up the eight-member team that competes in the Savannah of Queens Park Oval in February. Wilson forced her way into recognition when she defeated CARIFTA Games gold medallist and 2009 Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Jevina Straker twice last year before returning to win the National Park race last Sunday for her third consecutive win.
Wilson won the junior girls race while Morgan topped the senior race. Morgan, following injury issues last year during the South American 10km race, returned to form at a 10km race in Suriname two weeks before the AAG Cross Country event.
