Following their humiliating defeat against Bermuda 3-0 in the opening match of the CONCACAF Under-20 Qualifying – stage-two – Guyana will be hard pressed to pull off a win in their second game against the home team, Suriname, this evening at the Franklin Essed Stadium.
Suriname defeated the Netherlands Antilles by the odd goal in three in the feature game on Wednesday evening and will be aiming to consolidate their claim for the final available spot in the CONCACAF 12-team finals later this year in Guatemala.
This young Guyanese team led by Captain Colin Nelson will have to step up the pace a few notches if they are to get past the home team tonight in feature play from 19:00hrs Suriname time, 18:00hrs Guyana time.
With the loss of one of their main defenders, Ryan Crandon who was booked twice in the Bermuda game, the Technical Staff will have to make some changes in their quest for a win; also, the lack of creativity and cohesion between the midfield and forwards will pose some more challenges for Head Coach Collie Hercules and his support staff.
The energetic Trayon Bobb can very well find himself in the starting line up to add some energy to the midfield, while nippy forward Telson McKinnon can also find himself in the starting line-up at the expense of Sheldon Holder who did not look the part in the opening game against Bermuda.
Left side midfielder Delroy Ferdinand might also come into play at the expense of Deshawn Joseph. Captain Nelson and USA based midfielder Brandon Beresford who enjoyed a good opening game despite the loss will be looking to replicate that performance this evening to ensure a win for Guyana.
Guyana did not look comfortable on the new Artificial Turf while the other three countries all looked at home. The test against the fast running Surinamese will be another good challenge for the young Guyanese.
Hercules, speaking after the first game did say that fitness was a big contributing
factor to the loss.
The team did not train yesterday morning, a team meeting was held to review the game with plans being made for the Suriname encounter.
The Guyanese must win today if they are to stake a serious claim for the Guatemala leg.
Bermuda is sitting at the top of the standings by virtue of goal difference but share the same points as Suriname, 3 each. Guyana and the Netherlands Antilles are without a point.
