Preliminary investigations into Tuesday’s plane crash in the North West District have revealed that the aircraft may have landed short of the runway.
There was substantial damage to the plane with officials saying yesterday that several questions are now being asked.
It is the second accident in five months in the interior for Oxford Flights.
Yesterday, Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Zulficar Mohamed, questioned whether he was worried about the two incidents happening within months, for the same operator, admitted that his department is “not too happy”.
The official, who is charged with regulatory oversight for safety in the aviation industry, stopped short of blaming pilot error for Tuesday’s incident and said it was too early to conclude that.
With the Cessna 206 the only aircraft in operation by Oxford Flights, GCAA is not immediately suspending operations as there is said to be no need to do so.
However, any intentions to use other aircraft will have to be green-lighted by GCAA.
On Tuesday, according to reports, the aircraft crash-landed on the Baramita airstrip in the North West District at around 09:33hrs. Only the pilot, Christopher George, was aboard at the time of the accident. Fortunately, he escaped unharmed.
The six-seater single-engine plane, which reportedly departed at 08:15hrs was transporting cargo.
Officials of Oxford Flights told this publication that an investigative team had been deployed to the location.
The GCAA Director General yesterday confirmed that there was substantial damage to the propeller, nose gear, front wheel and one of the wing tips of the aircraft, and its engine may have to be replaced.
Last year, on August 21, passengers and a pilot in another Cessna 206 operated by Oxford Flights escaped injury after the aircraft skidded off a runway at Ekereku, Region Seven, just before taking off.
