An Anna Catherina man has been remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of a taxi driver from Corneila Ida.
The accused, 41 year-old Fazal Bacchus, of Lot 7 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, made an appearance yesterday at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin.
It is alleged that on January 16 last at Anna Catherina, Bacchus murdered 46 year-old Dhanpaul Rambarack. The charge was indictable and as such, the accused was not required to plead.
He was remanded to prison and is expected to make his next court appearance on April 6.
On January 16, last, Rambarack was telephoned by a female acquaintance, who lives at Anna Catherina. The woman reportedly told Rambarack that Bacchus, who is her neighbour, was being verbally abusive towards her. According to reports, Rambarack left his Corneila Ida home to go and see what the issue was between the two persons.
It is alleged that upon his arrival at the location he was attacked and severely beaten by Bacchus. The injured Rambarack was left lying on the road and was subsequently rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by Bacchus’ wife. Rambarack was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Bacchus was subsequently contacted by a relative on his mobile phone and was informed that Rambarack had died. The man then turned himself over to ranks at the Leonora Police Station.
A post mortem examination revealed that Rambarack died as a result of hemorrhaging in the brain due to blunt trauma.
