Heavenly Angels crushed Number 68 All Stars by 6 wickets and earned the right to represent the Berbice zone in the impending quarterfinals when play in the Regal Stationery and Computer Centre cricket tournament continued on Sunday January 16.
The tournament organised by the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport also witnessed matches in the Males Over 35 and 20/20 and the females open 10/10 softball tournaments.
Number 68 All Stars won the toss and elected to bat, amassing a challenging 101-4 in their 10 overs. Shenella Mc Bean led the way with an enterprising 35 off 16 balls which included 3 sixes and a four.
She was supported by Onica Tello who lashed 32 (2×6; 2×4). Erva Giddings (3-6 from 2 overs) destroyed the opposition and eventually earned the prize for the best bowler.
In their turn at the crease Heavenly Angels lost 2 quick wickets, but Erva Giddings (47*) retained her composure and guided her team to the winning total.
The winners will join Ituni Village Warriors, Mahaica Princesses, Marshon Female Team, Monar Institute and the winners of Essequibo in the quarter finals to be played shortly.
Meanwhile, Young Star XI playing their last match defeated number 55 Survival XI by 51 runs after the former team took first strike and rattled up 123-2 in 10 overs. Romona Albert lashed a blistering 73 (7×6) with support from Shenika Singh who scored 21 (2×6).
Sharo Dallon bowled also contributed 2-13 from 2 overs and eventually earned the award of best bowler for number 55 Survival XI.
Number 55 Survival XI then ruined their chances of a final berth catapulting for 72 in 9.3 overs to Young Stars. Sharo Dallon scored 20 amidst the failure of her colleagues to get into double figures.
The bowling for Young Stars was led by quick bowler Nicola Mc Bean (3-13 from 2 overs) with support from Melissa Albert (2-18 from 2 overs).
Meanwhile matches in the Over 35 category will resume this weekend with the two remaining spots in Demerara up for grabs.
The teams contesting for those positions are Brush XI and Mc Masters A and B.
The winners in the over 35 category will cart off $100,000 and a trophy while the runners-up will receive half that amount and a trophy. There will also be prizes for the best batter in the tournament as well as the best bowler.
The Most Valuable Player will also receive a prize as will the zone winners, Man of the match in the finals and the fielder that takes the best catch in the final.
The winners in the female category would win $50,000 and a trophy while the runners up receive $30,000 and a trophy.
Prizes will also be given to the best female batter in the tournament as well as the tournament’s best bowler, the MVP, Woman of the match (final) and the player that takes the best catch in the final.
