It’s now down to crunch time for the Junior Jaguars as the battle for the 12th and final spot to the CONCACAF Under-20 finals for the World Cup kicks off today at the Franklin Essed Stadium, Paramaribo, Suriname.
The young Guyanese under the guidance of Collie Hercules have been preparing for just over two weeks now and as Hercules noted when he spoke with Kaieteur News last evening after their final practice session at the playing venue, “It’s now up to the players to go out there and make themselves and country proud.”
Hercules said tat the Technical staff worked to whip the players into the best possible shape ahead of what he considers to be a very important assignment for Guyana.
After arriving in Suriname on Monday afternoon, the players were involved in two light sessions yesterday where they did some fine tuning on finishing, free kicks (for & against) and some defensive work.
The mood in the camp is one of confidence Hercules explained. “The players are all in a positive mood and they are eager to show what they can do against these teams we will be facing. First up against Bermuda whom we are not under estimating but we know we will take care of business against them.”
In his first assignment as Head Coach, following a satisfying career as a forward for Guyana and playing in the T&T Pro League where he also did some coaching, Hercules stated that he is up for the challenge of taking Guyana’s football back to the top in the Caribbean and further afield.
Guyana and the other teams in the group, Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles are all conscious of the fact that only the winner of the group will move on to the CONCACAF finals set for Guatemala in April.
At the helm of the team as expected is Captain Colin Nelson who will have Ryan Crandon, Trenton Bangree and Deshawn Joseph as his defenders; Richie Richards will stand between the uprights.
The midfielders are Bevon Moseley, Les Charles Critchlow, Brandon Beresford and Eon Alleyne. Hunting goals will be Olvis Mitchell and Sheldon Holder.
Hercules is making an appeal to all football fans, lovers and followers to rally behind this young and confident team as they seek to bring further glory to Guyana in the sporting arena.
Kick off time is 17:00hrs Suriname time, 18:00hrs Guyana time.
The Stadium at which the game is being played has a brand new artificial turf that is being used for just the 5th time. It is part of the Suriname Football Bond’s Goal Project, an impressive facility that also has a normal football field; two small artificial fields and a Hotel.
