A four-year-old female nursery school student of Moco-Moco in the Central Rupununi was pronounced dead at the Lethem Hospital shortly after she ingested a poisonous liquid which was intended to kill the prevalent Makushi ants.
Kaieteur News understands that the child, Juliana Davis, was playing with some other children when she came upon a bottle containing the liquid, which was stashed away in a fowl pen.
Reports are that the child mistook the liquid for a beverage and ingested almost a half litre of it. The poison acted quickly inside her and she ran home and began vomiting.
The child was rushed to the Lethem Hospital some 15 miles away but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have taken possession of the remains of the liquid and are questioning a number of persons as they investigate the matter.
