Seasoned cyclist Warren McKay held off the pack to win the fourth Annual Franco Crawford sponsored Flying Aces Cycling Club 46-mile cycle Road race held on Sunday from Springlands Police Station on the Upper Corentyne to Main and Alexander Street in New Amsterdam.
McKay riding out of the Roraima Cycle Club covered the distance in a time of 1hr 45 minutes to win in a driving finish from fellow national cyclist Junior Niles riding out of the Carlton Wheelers Cycle club by a cycle length as the two riders led the way home.
A large filed of cyclist including those from Linden and Georgetown travelled to Berbice to compete. The Race which was the first for the 2011 cycling season saw some 48 cyclist taking part.
In third Position was Walter Grant Stewart “the one hand wonder” of Continental who took third place ahead of Gerron Williams also of Continental and Raymond Newton of Roraima in another sprint finish. The other top finishers were Robin Persaud, Alex Mendez, Eric Shankar, Mark Lewis and Alonzo Greaves.
There was a special category for cyclist from the host Flying Aces Cycle Club with national junior Champion Neil Reece coming home ahead of Insane Jaundoo, Wasim Hasnoo and Ray Millington as they occupied the top four spots.
Michael Anthony of the Bauxhaul Cycle Club was the first home among the Juveniles and he was followed by Romel Chetram and Hakeem Arthur. The Juveniles covered a distance of 20 miles.
The female riders covered a distance of 14 miles and saw Lindener Hazina Barrett getting the better of seasoned campaigner Naomi Singh with Crystal Lambert occupying the third spot.
Pre race favourite Marica Dick suffered a misfortune during the race and came in fourth.
There were eight Prime point prizes at stake and these were taken by Newton with four, Niles three and McKay one. The defending champion was Junior Niles.
The event was sponsored by overseas based cyclist Franco Crawford a former member of the Flying Aces Cycling Club who now resides in London England and club mate Jamaican Born Englishman Leaton Beaton.
Both men rides for the De Ver cycling club in London England and participated in the event but failed to place.
Speaking after the event Crawford who also rides in Belgium and Holland said that he was happy to be able to return to Guyana and give back to the home country and community.
He is impressed by the talent that is available at home, but stated that the cycling is an expensive sport and as such cyclists need to corporate some more in order to move forward.
He said that local cyclists need the right assistance to prosper and with help they can be among the best in the business.
Blake in his remarks also expressed his pleasure in being able to help. He like Crawford was very impressed with the level and talent available.
They were both surprise at the speed the locals were riding at in the hot sun. Thy promised to return next year and come earlier so as to get acclimatized and bring more cyclist out of Jamaica and England to compete.
The event was coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts of the Flying Aces cycling club.
