Sergeant Faye Perreira, a policewoman attached to the Beterverwagting Police Station was yesterday brought before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer charges ranging from demanding money with menace to collection inducement.
It is alleged that on January 3, last, while being a subordinate officer-in-charge and an agent of the Government at the Beterverwagting Police Station, Perreira obtained from Hookumchand, the sum of $50,000 as an inducement or reward for forgoing to prosecute the said Hookumchand, a defendant that was in police custody in relation to his principal affairs.
Perreira’s employer is also alleging that on January 12, at the said police station, she demanded with menace the sum of $40,000 from Hookumchand.
The woman pleaded not guilty. She is being represented by defense counsel Patrice Henry, who told that court that his client is 42 years old and has been a serving member of the Guyana Police Force for over 16 years. He added that the Sergeant is also married with four children.
Police prosecutor Lionel Harvey explained to the court that on the days in question, officers responding to a report made by the plaintiff, Hookumchand that Perreira had demanded bribe from him and he was in the process of handing over the money. Due to the quick action by ranks, Sergeant Faye Perreira was caught.
The Sergeant was allowed bail in the sum of $50,000 for the charge of collecting inducement and $75,000 for demanding money with menace.
The matter will be called again on Wednesday, at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
