Former Guyana cricketer and member of the Demerara Cricket Board, businessman Rohan Sarjoo was up to late last night being questioned by police in connection with last May’s acid attack which disfigured the face of Guyana Cricket Board Treasurer Pritipaul Jaigobin.
Sarjoo was invited to the Brickdam Police Station immediately after leaving a heated meeting of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB), at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda.
Police declined to say what led to their suspicions about Sarjoo’s involvement in the attack but according to sources, the interest in Sarjoo apparently stems from reports received by other Cricket Board Executives.
Kaieteur News understands that the police turned up at the GCC and indicated that Sarjoo who was attending the meeting was wanted for questioning.
However, reports stated that the ranks were however instructed to wait until he was free from the meeting and have him report to the Brickdam Police Station.
The police waited for at least two hours until the meeting was over and then escorted the former Guyana opening batsman to the station.
Jaigobin’s face was badly disfigured when a man threw a corrosive liquid on him as he was leaving a Chinese restaurant on East Coast Demerara on his way home.
From the inception, there was suspicion that the attack stemmed from differences he was having with other Cricket Board officials because of his stance on certain issues.
“I have my suspicions on who was behind this but since I don’t know for sure and did not recognize the person who threw the acid…. and also for security reasons…. My family and I have decided to let the matter rest. God is in charge and he will ensure justice is served,” Jaigobin, who works at the National Authorisation Office (NAO) in Guyana’s Ministry of Finance, had told Kaieteur News shortly after he was discharged from hospital.
Some of Sarjoo’s colleagues on the DCB believe that his detention was orchestrated by a section of the board whose views on the running of the organization are at odds with them.
