Leave for Suriname today; oppose Bermuda on Wednesday in 1st game
By Franklin Wilson
With 11 countries already booking their place in the CONCACAF Under-20 finals which will be contested in Guatemala from April 3-17, 2011; the battle is now on for the 12th and final available spot.
Earning the right to contest for this spot are Guyana, host Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles and Bermuda – they will collide during this week at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo.
Guyana and Bermuda will open group play on Wednesday with Suriname and the Netherlands facing off in the feature game also on Wednesday.
Head Coach of the ‘Junior Jaguars’ Collie Hitman’ Hercules is aiming to hit the Jackpot by guiding Guyana to overall group victory and a place in the finals.
Hercules took over the top Technical spot from another former National Player, Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite and has expressed confidence that the young Guyanese team, which is expected to once again be led by central defender Colin Nelson, will do Guyana proud.
The team was encamped in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden from January 5 and is rearing to bring glory to their country and themselves.
The task will not be an easy one but the young team is confident that they have what it takes to take care of business against the opposing teams.
Guyana, in the recent past, has enjoyed good results against the Surinamese in their back yard and these players while conscious of that fact will not take the home team for granted.
Nelson at the back will have potent support from Ryan Crandon, the two have stood rock solid for the Under-20s in their many battles to date and brings back memories of present national senior Captain Howard Lowe and his Twin, former National Captain Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard – the two referred to as the Twin Towers in the T&T Pro Leagues.
Added support in defence will come from Mortimer Ramdehol, Les Charles Critchlow, Calvin De Souza, Koema Sullivan, De Shawn Joseph and Trenton Lashley.
Controlling the engine room (midfield) will be Bevon Moseley, Eon Alleyne, Treyon Bobb, Marco Marcus and USA based Brandon Beresford who can also perform as a forward.
Telson McKinnon will lead the charge up front for goals with adequate back up from Sheldon Holder and Olvis Mitchell.
The goalkeepers are Richie Richards, Dorville Stewart and Odel Allicock.
Hercules leads the technical minds with his Assistants being Keith O’Jeer, Brian Joseph and Andre Hazel (Goalkeeper). Team Physio is Michelle Jackman while Guyana Football Federation Technical Development Officer Lyndon France will also travel with the team.
In the Caribbean first round qualifying playoff, Suriname lost to Trinidad and Tobago in a home and away playoff, 2-4 on aggregate on December 10th and 20th, 2010.
In other first round qualifying, Guyana finished second to Jamaica which won the group hosted at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The Jamaicans defeated the Guyanese 2-0 following impressive wins over Grenada 6-1 and the United States Virgin Islands 13-0.
The young Jaguars took care of the United States Virgin Islands 5-1 and Grenada 3-0.
The Netherlands Antilles finished as the runner-up team to Cuba while Bermuda got past Antigua & Barbuda and drew with Guadeloupe.
