Former Antigua, Leeward Islands and West Indies Captain Richie Richardson will replace his former Windies teammate Joel Garner who served as interim Manager of the regional cricket team for just over a year.
The 49-year-old right-handed batsmen who averaged 44.39 from 86 Tests with 16 centuries, also played 224 ODIs for the West Indies during the glory days of the 1980s before he played his final Test in 1995 against England, the same year that the regional team lost their first Test series in 15 years, the longest unbeaten run by any International sports team.
Richardson has been appointed for a two year term and will commence duties immediately in preparation for the West Indies tour to Sri Lanka for three One Day Internationals to be followed by the World Cup campaign.
The Regional team departs the Caribbean on January 26 for the Sri Lanka tour and will play World Cup matches in Sri Lanka India and Bangladesh before returning home for their home series against Pakistan and India.
Richardson, who retired from International cricket after his final ODI against Australia in 1996, has been a successful businessman
engaged in sport tourism ventures in Antigua and Barbuda and the United Kingdom, since his retirement.
Like fellow Antiguan Sir Viv Richards, the attacking Richardson hardly ever wore a helmet during his prime and his wide-brimmed maroon sunhat became a trademark around the world.
Guyanese would remember his ‘big’ centuries at Bourda, one of his favorite grounds.
“I feel tremendously honoured to be once again asked to serve West Indies cricket. I believe that it is critical for me to lend support to the efforts to re-develop the sport in the region,” Richardson said yesterday from his home Island.
“As a former player and captain I gave my all for West Indies cricket on the field. We are at the cusp of a new era and it is now time for me to contribute off the field and aid in the building and resurgence of West Indies cricket,” he added.
WICB CEO, Dr. Ernest Hilaire said Richardson’s appointment brings immense value to the Team Management Unit.
“He is a legendary former West Indian batsman and captain but he also brings professional business expertise and this provides an ideal fit as we continue to enhance our professional capacity in all areas of West Indies cricket.” said Hilaire who is also in Antigua for the Caribbean T20 cricket tournament.
