Leave for Suriname tomorrow confident of winning group
Second half goals from Telson McKinnon and USA based Brandon Beresford guided the National Under-20 football team to a 2-0 win yesterday afternoon over BK International Western Tigers in the former’s final warm up game ahead of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, this week.
The first half did not produce much sparks but the Junior Jaguars turned up the heat on the Tigers in the second half of the match which saw McKinnon and Beresford rocking the back of the nets.
Substitute Treyon Bobb added some life to the midfield with his energetic and nimble footwork.
He provided the platform for the second goal, working his way into the box as he drew goalkeeper Travis Best off his line.
Best blocked Bobb’s shot but the rebound fell into the path of Beresford who made no mistake by finishing excellently.
Head Coach Collie Hercules said that the test for his charges was good and they stood up to the challenge of Western Tigers very well noting that the team continues to show encouraging improvement.
Hercules said himself and the Technical staff is very optimistic going into the tournament in Suriname.
“I saw some good work in the three main departments – defence, midfield, forward – as we strive to play as a group rather than as individuals and this was comforting to see today. We try to control our destiny; we try to win each game so our concentration will be on the first game in Suriname to get three points.
Winning will put pressure on the other teams in the group.”
Hercules said that he is satisfied with the work ethic of the team and lauded the efforts of the Technical staff that was in charge of the team before he took over as Head Coach.
“These guys came to the camp with something and we just tried to build from what the previous did and try to add a few things. These players have shown great improvement and I am satisfied with that.”
The team broke camp after yesterday’s game and will re-group this afternoon before travelling to Suriname tomorrow.
Guyana will play Bermuda on Wednesday in their first game at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium while Suriname will face the Netherlands Antilles in the feature game.
Only the winner of the group will advance to the CONCACAF 12-team finals set for Guatemala, April 3-17. (Franklin Wilson)
