The eagerly awaited “Stag Beer & El Dorado Rum” countrywide male and female softball tournament begins next Sunday at various venues throughout the country.
Demerara Distillers Ltd. (DDL), producers of the world’s best rum “El Dorado” and beverage giant Ansa McAl, supplier of Stag Beer, are the proud sponsors of this tournament, a traditional game of cricket invented by Guyanese.
The tournament will be a “Round Robin” system and played in three categories: Male Open 15/15, Female Open 10/10, and Male Over 40 yrs 25/25 overs. Winning teams will receive $50,000 and a trophy, Runner-up: $25,000 + trophy, Player of the Match in the finals: $5,000 and trophy, Player of the tournament in each category: $5,000 and trophy.
The three finals are set for May 29 at the GCC Ground, Bourda. There will be a game held every Friday night under floodlights at Bourda when the competition begins. The Director of Sports Neil Kumar has given his blessings to the competition.
Entrance fee for male teams is $5,000 and female is $2,000.
All teams interested in competing will be accepted and can call GFSCA organiser Wayne Jones at 650-1790, 225-0994.
This competition will be put on hold for four weeks when the GT&T 10/10 starts. Two weeks for the beginning and two weeks for the ending of the GT&T 10/10.
Players will be picked to play for their various counties based on their performance in the Stag Beer & El Dorado Rum tournament, for the “Mike’s Pharmacy Inter-county Softball”. This tournament will be held in June in all three categories.
The four teams that qualify for the semifinals in the Male Open and the two finalist of the Male Over 40 yrs, will take part in the Guyana Cup 2011 to be held on the 28th, 29th, & 30th of October 2011. Teams from South Florida, Orlando, New York, Connecticut, Georgia, Ocala, Maryland and Toronto will be here to play the Guyana Cup Open and Masters Tournament. Also the eight female teams that qualify for the quarterfinals will play in a separate tournament alongside the Guyana Cup.
These competitions are run and organized by the Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports. All umpires, team captains or representatives are asked to be at the GCC Ground, Bourda, on Tuesday afternoon at 5:30pm for further discussions. Also players, who are going to play the “Florida Cup 2011 Master Tournament”, have already started practicing with the bigger softball. This tournament will be held in USA on March 4, 5 and 6.
