Appearing before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry (ag) on Thursday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court was Mark Smith who was charged with having in his possession a dangerous weapon without lawful authority.
According to Police Prosecutor, Venetta Pindar, on January 11, last, the Police Mobile Patrol was on patrol in the vicinity of Camp Street the ranks saw Smith attacking persons on the roadways with a knife. They arrested Smith. The man was unrepresented in Court. When asked to plead to the charge he replied, “Nah…Me nah know nothing bout dah”.
Smith said that he “got a house in Lamaha Park but it burnt down” and stated that he does odd jobs for people to earn an income. He has no previous convictions.
Prosecutor Pindar objected to bail on the grounds of the defendant having no fixed place of abode and being of unsound mind.
Smith was remanded and is expected to make his next court appearance on January 17. Also at the Georgetown Magistrate Court acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry remanded Linden Saunders, 25, and Okeva Grevion, 20, after they appeared before her charged with offences ranging from the cultivation of marijuana to possession of the illegal substance.
The two dreadlocked men made their way shoe-less into the court on Thursday last.
Neither of them was represented by an attorney.
It is alleged that January 10, the police carried out a raid in the Yarrowkabra area on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, it was during the raid that lawmen swooped down on a camp that was constructed of tarpaulin.
While the officers were there they observed Saunders tending to a field of marijuana plants which were about four feet tall.
At the camp a bag with seeds, leaves and stems suspected to be that of cannabis were later found in Grevion’s possession.
They both pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Bail was refused and the duo will make their next court appearance on January 17.
