Donna Hunte appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to face the charge of unlawfully and maliciously wounding her husband Kenneth Rogers.
Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question, the defendant stabbed the plaintiff in his abdomen with a knife.
In her defence, Hunte told Magistrate Beharry that she was and still is suffering from years of domestic abuse by Rogers and that on the occasion where he received a stab wound to the abdomen, her husband had arrived home in a drunken state and proceeded to assault her while he was armed with a knife.
The defendant explained that the injuries Rogers received was as a result of her trying to take the knife away from him.
She told Magistrate Beharry that she resides at Lot 7 Rasville, Roxanne Burnham Gardens and is a vendor by occupation.
The Prosecutor had no objection to bail, hence Magistrate Beharry set bail in the sum of $75,000 which was later reduced to $50,000 after the defendant told the court that she could not afford to pay the original amount.
Hunte is scheduled to return to court on January 28.
