Ministry of Sport pays tribute and farewell to Joey Carew

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport wishes to place on record its recognition and appreciation of the sterling contributions to West Indies cricket made by the late Michael “Joey” Carew of Trinidad and Tobago.
Carew was an early cricketing favourite for Guyanese lovers of the game when he first played, decades ago, at Bourda, with and against our own greats like Kanhai, Solomon, Butcher and Gibbs, both at quadrangular tournaments and later in tests for the emergent West Indies.
Condolences are extended to his immediate family and relatives, his Trinidadian Countrymen and Cricketing fraternity and the wider West Indian Community.
These condolences are balanced by the mitigating achievements his keen cricketing mind contributed to the sport Caribbean people love.
The Ministry appreciates the ability “Joey” displayed when he relinquished his on field, opening-batsman role to demonstrate equal prowess at managing aspects of both Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies Cricket.
He was one cricketer who never lost interest in the present and future fortunes of West Indian Cricket.  Additionally cricketing history will record for the games’ posterity that almost single handedly in the beginning, he fathered, nurtured and gave the game the prodigy that became Brian Charles Lara.
That is but a personification of the legacy that Joey Carew has left West Indians and the wider world of cricket lovers.
Thanks, Joey, for an innings well played, from the government and people of Guyana.
