The Guyana Cricket Board is scheduled to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on January 30 next and from all appearances the race for the presidential seat is intensifying. The three faces that seem to be in the frontline position for the prestigious post are Bish Panday, Bissoondial Singh and Ramsay Ali. All three are successful businessmen, is verse in the intricacies of the sport and has a plethora of management skill and experience that can tip the scale in their respective direction.
While this may be so, the organizers of the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament believe that the man for the job is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sterling Products Ltd, Ramsay Ali. They have publicly endorsed the business magnate for the prestigious position while urging the many other clubs to follow their lead.
Speaking with Kaieteur News via telephone, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major intimated that the K&S duo felt obliged to support Mr. Ali based on their confidence of his leadership ability coupled with his honesty. “During the twenty odd years of promoting the K&S football tournament we have had close relations with Mr. Ali, first as Chief Finance Officer of Banks DIH Ltd and subsequently his present portfolio. We were always impressed with his organizational skill and unbridled honesty,” said Mr. Major. He further noted the sad state of cricket in Guyana and opines that Mr. Ali has the competence and integrity to restore some pride to the sport while positively influencing the fortunes of local cricketers.
Commenting on a letter to the editor appearing in an earlier edition of this publication that harpoons Ali’s character, Shanghai said that while such behaviours go with the territory, such bushwhacking ploys would only sink the game further into the mire. The letter writer, an influential individual within the cricket circles has leveled accusations of impropriety at Mr. Ali which he feels should act against the latter individual’s chances at the presidency. Mr. Major laments such attitudes and urged the various nominees to fight a clean fight as in the end any adverse behaviour would reflect negatively on the development of the sport.
Mr. Ali has decided to contest the elections after incumbent President Chetram Singh declined the nomination for another term. Already, he has received a vote of confidence from the Essequibo Board while the affiliates from Demerara and Berbice are yet to disclose their choice.
Kaieteur Sport sought a comment from Mr. Ali and he said that while he is quietly optimistic of winning the election he prefers to influence the clubs rather than fighting dirty battles with his competitors. Mr. Ali said that he has outlined a comprehensive programme for cricket development and would prefer to focus on that aspect of the campaign rather than engage in character assassination. He expressed delight at the vote of confidence garnered from the K&S duo saying that he has worked with them since the embryonic days of the championship and they (Kashif and Shanghai) were privy to his organizational skills. “We have worked together and have applied organizational techniques to make the K&S tournament what it is today. I envisage similar applications in the cricket arena would turn the sport around and benefit the local players immensely,” said Mr. Ali.
Meanwhile, outgoing President, Chetram Singh said that he was extremely delighted to have played such an important part in the development of local cricket. He cited ill health and concentration on his business as the two major reasons for declining nomination for another term.
Mr. Singh declined from speculation when asked to select the individual with the best chance at succeeding him. “I have noted the aspirants and am optimistic that the elected individual would aspire to lift the sport to another level,” said Mr. Singh.
