Barticians and persons living in surrounding communities have expressed their disgust over recent occurrences as it relates to the sitting of the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
This newspaper was told that the first sitting of court in the community started yesterday at around 15:00 hours. According to reports, the Magistrate only arrived in Bartica sometime after 14:00 hours yesterday when the Transport and Harbours Department ferry arrived.
Earlier in the day, persons from the community and those who had travelled miles from other riverain communities for their matters to be heard, were forced to leave because the Magistrate was not present.
According to reports out of the area the presiding Magistrate opted to travel on the ferry as opposed to the speedboat.
“We understand if a person has fears with the speedboat…if that was so then the magistrate could have come from the day before so that we can get our two-day court, because is only two days a month we get a hearing,” one man lamented.
Others complained that last week they turned up for court as usual but there was no court, since the magistrate did not show up. This newspaper was told that prisoners who were also brought from Georgetown, had to be taken back to prison without a hearing.
Persons said they are calling on the authorities to at least have the decency to inform them of the new court dates.
Meanwhile this newspaper was told that the Bartica Magistrates’ court was called to order sometime around 15:00 hours yesterday when most persons had already left. The court will be sitting again today.
