As Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM) mourn the passing of Mr. Michael Conrad ‘Joey’ Carew, Her Excellency Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite, Acting Secretary-General of CARICOM, is lauding his steadfast dedication to the game of cricket.
In a message to the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board, Ambassador Applewhaite noted that Mr. Carew’s dedication to the sport saw him move through the ranks from first class player for his native Trinidad and Tobago, to Test Cricketer for the West Indies and then to Chairman of the Selection Committee for the West Indies team.
The Acting Secretary-General said the former cricketer would be remembered for his astuteness about the sport.
The full text of the message reads:
It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Caribbean Community acknowledges the passing of Mr. Michael Conrad “Joey” Carew.
Mr. Carew’s steadfast dedication to the sport that he loved, cricket, saw him move through the ranks from first class player for his native Trinidad and Tobago , to Test Cricketer for the West Indies and then to Chairman of the Selection Committee for the West Indies team.
He will be remembered, above all else, for his astuteness about the sport, both on the field as Captain of Trinidad and Tobago which he led to two consecutive regional titles as well as with respect to the skill of cricketers.
This ability on the cricket field served him in good stead in his transition to the administration of the game, as a selector of the regional team for more than ten years, most of that time as Chairman of the Committee.
“Joey”, as he was known to all, was a dedicated servant to the sport and to West Indies cricket and his incisive views will be missed.
On behalf of the Community, the Secretariat and on my own behalf, I wish to extend to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago and to the Carew family, my deep condolences on their loss.
