The “New Revelations Vocal Group” a missionary singing group out of Venezuela, who were on a concert tour to Guyana certainly had some new “revelations” on Tuesday morning, after they were arrested, handcuffed and thrown in the lockups at Mackenzie and Wismar.
Members of the group which is led by Guyanese Robert Halley, who is also a naturalized Venezuelan, said that they were shocked to have been treated like common criminals by the Linden Police.
One of the members, Ricardo, said that on Tuesday they had gone down to Linden on-Line Internet Café to make some calls to their relatives overseas,
He said that while they were in the Internet, police suddenly appeared, and said ‘You and you and you come,’ as if they knew who they were looking for.
“They then carried us into this room in the building and searched us for guns, or whatever, and then they handcuffed us, and carried us to the police station.
“There they start to ask us a lot of questions who we are, where we came from, and what we thief.”
Another member, Rudy, said that he was really angry at the police as one of them “fling’ his identification card in his face. Rudy said that the police asked him a lot of questions, and when he answered or attempted to answer, he was told to “shut up, you telling lies.”
He was quick to point out, “I really glad I gon in there though, because I see how dem (prisoners) does feel; I now understand fully why some of dem react like they do. Is because of how they are being treated.’
One of the female members, Joselyn, said she was very scared, but conceded that maybe the experience was for a good purpose, as they were able to interact with the prisoners, who seemed very happy with their company.
However group leader Robert Halley who was not with the group when they were arrested— he was in Georgetown on business— said that he was very disappointed with the actions of the police, who should have known better than to treat the group the way they did.
Halley said that apart from coming to Guyana for the concert at the Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist church in Linden, he had also come to look into possibilities of opening up a new company in Guyana.
According to Halley he has been working in the petroleum industry in Venezuela for more than two decades, and as such he was contemplating coming here to share his expertise and knowledge with his countrymen in this area.
The man however pointed out that he was very disillusioned with the treatment meted out to the members of his group by the police, and as such is seriously ‘rethinking’ the whole situation.
Members of the New Revelation Vocal Group are, Gensis Bencomo, a medical student; Joselyn Salazar and Alexander Seetahal, students in mechanical engineering; Rudy Halley , student in industrial engineering; and Ricardo Halley, a musical producer.
The group has been in existence for 13 years, and has so far recorded two musical CDs.
Several Linden residents, including members of the Emmanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church, have condemned the action by the police in detaining the group without ‘just cause’.
A police source meanwhile said that they were only acting on information received, with regards to the detention of the missionary group.
It was also confirmed that several persons were arrested, questioned and subsequently released after the shooting of Albert “bolo” Joseph of Sunflower St Wismar, and the robbery at the A&R Cosmetics on Dageraad Avenue recently.
Both members of the Linden Police and civilians have been on high alert, since these two incidents, which occurred a few days apart.
“Bolo” subsequently succumbed last Friday.
