Fire Chief Marlon Gentle has said that initial investigations has not hinted that arson was the cause of the fire at Main Street which destroyed the building housing the Frandec Travel Service, LIAT Airlines Local branch, Dagron Tours and H & F Machinery Inc.
The incident happened shortly after 01:00hrs on Monday.
Gentle who spoke briefly to this publication, yesterday, said that investigations are still continuing, thus he could not make any pronouncements.
Meanwhile the police are also following some leads about the white car, which was seen leaving the area shortly before the fire.
According to sources they revisited the scene and spoke to several neighbours about what they might have seen the morning of the fire.
Persons in the area had told this publication that they heard three explosions with the third being the loudest.
Kathryn Eytle-McLean, the Chief Executive Officer of Frandec, had told this publication that she received a call some time after midnight on Monday informing her about the fire.
She said that she immediately rushed down to Main Street only to see the decades-old building engulfed in flames.
The CEO estimated her losses within the hundreds of millions.
Frandec is one of the oldest travel agencies in Guyana, representing several international airlines. The company has been in existence for over 50 years.
Officials from LIAT had said that the fire had not disrupted the airline operations.
It was explained that the fire merely damaged the equipment and records.
Peter Fraser, Chairman of H & F Machinery, had described the fire a “tremendous blow for his company”.
Chief Executive Officer for Dagron Tours, Ann Hamilton, told reporters that the entire database (records) for her company have been destroyed.
The fire occurred just hours before Hamilton was due to meet with a number of tourists.
The building is insured by the Guyana/Trinidad Mutual Insurance Company.
