The 2011 cycling season will get rolling in Berbice when the Flying Aces Cycling Club in Berbice in collaboration with overseas based Guyanese cyclist and Berbician Franco Crawford runs off the annual National Franco Crawford Cycle Road Race. This is the fourth year for the event.
The race will be held on Sunday January 16 from Springlands Police Station on the Upper Corentyne to Main and Alexander Street in New Amsterdam covering a distance of 46 miles. Starting time is 10:00 hrs.
There will be a number of prizes for the top finishers and outstanding riders during the journey.
The race, which is open to all cyclists in Guyana, will see the first ten finishers receiving prizes as well as the top four finishers from the club. Rewards will also be presented to the first three juveniles and the first three females. There will also be eight sprint point prizes up for grabs.
The juveniles will ride a distance of 20 miles while the females will be required to compete over a 10 miles distance. These handicap riders will start their journey immediately after the first bunch of cyclist would have past their starting point.
Franco Crawford who is the nephew of former national cycling champion, senior Council Marcel Crawford, is a former member of the club. He now resides in London, England and still plies his trade in his adopted country.
He returns regularly to sponsor this race and participate in other events. Crawford along with a fellow overseas rider and club mate Leaton Blake recently handed over the sponsorship cheque to coordinator of the event and club coach Randolph Roberts.
The duo will also be competing and is expected to match pedals with their local counterparts.
