Jamal Evance, 19, of Charity, Essequibo, was yesterday remanded after he pleaded guilty to break and enter before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Sentencing was deferred to January 31.
Between December 29 and December 30, last, at Second Avenue, Bartica, Evance broke into the St John-the-Baptist Primary School and stole a quantity of articles worth $433,775.
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on December 29, last, the headmistress of the institution secured the building and went home. It was upon her return the following day that she discovered the doors to several departments in the school open.
On closer observation she found a CD player, projector, a quantity of food stuff and a set of tools missing.
The matter was reported and following intense police investigation officers were able to apprehend Evance.
According to Telford, the accused later admitted that he did break into the school and carted off the articles.
The prosecutor added that the projector was however found in Evance’s possession.
He also took the ranks to an area where the rest of the articles were recovered.
At that point Magistrate Beharry enquired from the accused if he indeed pilfered all the articles, and he admitted to taking the CD player, projector and tools but not the rest of the items that the police are claiming he stole.
The accused also told the court that it was the security guard of the school who told him to steal the articles, sell them and give him half of the money.
