The Guyana Red Cross Society (GRSC) will be hosting its first blood drive for the New Year today at the Headquarters, Eve Leary, Kingston. The event is to begin from 12 noon to 5:30pm.
According to the GRSC, the organisation would like to surpass their 2010 target by 10 per cent of the national target or 1,000 units of voluntary blood by the end of 2011.
“This is very ambitious, but possible with your assistance. To help enable us to reach our targets we need to Promote, Recruit and continue to Retain our donors.” GRSC stated.
According to Communication Assistant of GRSC, Kerensa Singh, blood donors must maintain a healthy iron level in their diet by eating iron rich foods, such as red meat, fish, poultry, beans, iron-fortified cereals and raisins, be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with parental consent, weigh at least 110 lbs and must be free of STI’s and HIV/AIDS.
