Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo, yesterday told media operatives that he does not believe that the recent spate of seemly related attacks such as the arson attempts on the schools at Annandale and Enterprise, the grenade explosion and the channa bomb attack on the home of a Member of Parliament are related to elections.
He said that there is a fear among people that they might be somehow related and is as a result of elections this year but he said that this is not the case according to the information available thus far.
Jagdeo made reference to his New Year’s message to the nation in which he said that he hopes that Guyanese will act as a mature democracy. He still does have faith in the people of the country, he added.
He said that there are a few misguided politicians who want to exploit people through race and hate and those politicians belong in the dumpsite of history.
The Head of State did point out that after the elections people still have to continue to live their lives.
Jagdeo said that he hopes that the machinery (Ethnic Relations Commission) set up to deal with issues such as race hate, functions. “We have to condemn the (racists)”.
Commenting on the acts he reiterated, “There are various issues at play here. I don’t feel at this stage that it is all orchestrated.”
He said that the security forces have his instructions already and that they will deal condignly with any act of violence. “We will go where the trail takes us, even if it leads to politicians.”
Jagdeo charged that if anyone thinks that he/she can exploit elections this year that person will face resistance from the government.
Reacting to recent comments made by Opposition Leader Robert Corbin, Jagdeo repeated that there will be elections this year. He said that there will be no attempt on the part of himself or the Government to delay elections. “We constitutionally have to hold before the end of the year.”
Speaking to the issue of a third term Jagdeo said that he has had many persons lobby him to pursue a third term but his position is that he is not interested.
Jagdeo stressed that it was he who brought in term limits in the new Constitution. He signed it. “I have to respect the constitution and so I have absolutely no interest in a third term.”
He questioned why the issue keeps resurfacing specifically by two groups, namely the politicians and two private newspapers—Kaieteur News and Stabroek News.
Jagdeo, commenting on Corbin’s assertion that he had sought a legal opinion on a third term denied it and again challenged the Opposition Leader to identify the source; to produce the evidence.
During a conversation with Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission, Dr Steve Surujbally, the latter confirmed that such an opinion was sought by the commission of its legal officer. Jagdeo said that this upsets him because he has repeatedly said that he is not interested in a third term. He said that the elections commission had no right to second guess him.
He said that if this is what Corbin heard then he was misled or is misleading and that he must identify the other two sources.
