Deadly grenade blast victim remains ‘John Doe’

The police seem to have reached yet another dead end as all of their efforts to identify the man who was killed in last Wednesday’s grenade explosion are being frustrated.
Yet again relatives of another man came forward saying they had reason to believe that the remains may be that of their relative, Gordon Baird. It was not clear what promoted a cousin, Wayne James, to visit the Brickdam Police Station yesterday to assist the police with their investigations.
This newspaper was told that James in the company of Police ranks also visited the Lyken Funeral home and he told investigators that the remains he viewed were that of his cousin Gordon Baird.
However, the police decided to make a thorough check to verify the man’s identity. According to the information which was passed on to investigators ‘Gordon Baird’ spent most of his time around the city and his nights at the East La Penitence Night Shelter.
When ranks turned up at the shelter yesterday afternoon Gordon Baird greeted them. He was alive and well. Hence up to press time yesterday the victim of the grenade blast remained unidentified.
On Wednesday last, 19 persons were injured and one man killed after the grenade went off. According to police reports, the man who was killed was reportedly the one carrying the grenade. It is not clear if the man picked up the device from a stall which he was cleaning or he had it in his possession prior to going to the stall.
However, Commissioner of Police Henry Greene has since stated that the man was believed to be a courier for drug and other illegal items around the Stabroek Market area.
In the meantime police are asking the public to help them identify the dead man.
