Why shouldn’t PPP members select the presidential candidate through democratic principles?

Dear Editor,
It is no secret that Guyana is longing for new and innovative leadership. While I maintain that the PPP has been hijacked by those who choose personal vendetta and personal gain instead of the development of country and the upliftment of its people, I believe that Guyana better days lie ahead, I believe that PPP members in the upcoming elections would send a strong and decisive message to the current leaders of our party, I would be the first member the of the PPP to say to Donald Ramotar and Bharrat Jagdeoin in no uncertain term that, “No Moses No Victory”.
It is clear that Guyanese at home and in the Diaspora are rallying around Moses Nagamootoo to lead us out of the situation our party and country found itself in. If Donald and Bharrat believe that Moses has lost his appeal then let them open up the process, after all we are not asking for anything illegal, unethical or unfair, we are asking for a process that is fair and free from fear.
Moses Nagamootoo has indicated many times before, “that its not who but by what process”.
He has also indicated that he would walk away from any process that is not fair. I want to put the party on notice that should Moses leave the PPP many others would follow. To leave Moses out of the selection process would be a mistake of catastrophic proportions.
The time has come for our party to be transformed into an organisation that is democratic, transparent and is above board. Our members, supporters and well-wishers expect nothing less. Cheddi Jagan created the PPP 60 years ago to respond to the needs at that time. Then in 1992 the party was transformed to respond to the needs of the people, hence the alliance with its civic component among other things.
Now it is time for yet another transformation, this time it is expected that our party would move one step closer to becoming a party that is completely democratic in its outlook. They are many reasons why I support a Moses Nagamootoo presidency, but I am not confined to my own views. Like Moses I would accept any process that is fair and I would rally around any candidate dully elected by a fair process.
With Donald Ramotar being piggy backed into leadership contention by the President and being projected in international circles as the sole successor, it is time for us to stand up and be counted.
How can my party allow the PNCR to out shine it with its democratic practices? Why shouldn’t we be allowed to select our presidential candidate through democratic principles? Why Guyanese are not allowed to see and hear those that aspire to lead us in debate? What is the big secret, what are they sacred about?
Even though they tried to sideline him, Moses Nagamootoo remains the most popular leader in the PPP, and from Charity to Crabwood Creek it is clear that Moses Nagamootoo remain a household name in Guyanese politics.
With all the negative lobbying against him at our last congress at Diamond Moses still manage to secure the 5th largest amount of votes, I remember distinctly, members being told not to vote for Moses or Ralph Ramkarran. 2011 is going to be a very decisive year for our party’s survival and for our country’s future.
Very soon citizens would be presented with brand new presidential candidates and they would make a choice of what type of Guyana they want to live in.
I urge the current leadership of the PPP to give them a proper choice – present them with the best possible leadership that our party can offer – do the correct and ethical thing and open up the process and may the best person win.
