The Ministry of Public Works yesterday held a series of meetings, which can be described as successful, with the Stabroek market vendors in order to regularise activities there.
The meetings came in the wake of the demolition of several stalls in the aftermath of last Wednesday’s grenade explosion which killed one man and wounded several other persons.
Fortunately for those who depend on vending to make a daily bread, the Ministry of Public Works yesterday agreed to relocate the majority of those who were affected by the demolition.
It was decided that, the bread vendors’ position will not change; they will continue to vend under the large elevated flat screen digital display.
The fruit vendors will vend on a restricted area in front of KFC and the hat vendors will vend opposite the Stabroek Market Square at the side of Demico.
Around 4:00PM yesterday, authorities were already marking “NO STOPPING” signs and outlines to guide vendors as to their boundaries.
Vendors are under strict rules not to come out of their marked spaces.
The hats and fruits vendors will now be allowed to vend from 6:00AM- 6PM; while, the bread vendors will be allowed to sell from 3:00PM-9:00PM.
With immediate effect, a person will only be allowed to operate one stall at a time.
A system was put in place that, anyone who does not abide by the rules and are warned several times, will be removed. Around 5:00PM yesterday one bread vendor had already recommenced “business as usual”.
The fruit, hat and bread vendors are expected to commence vending today in their new locations.
Meanwhile, the deteriorated road at the Stabroek Market square was yesterday being patched in Public Works Minister Robeson Benn’s effort to develop the area.
The recent moves stem from the intervention of President Bharrat Jagdeo in the wake of protest by vendors, following the wanton demolition campaign which was launched after the grenade explosion.
