– Stadium only other option
As the Guyana Sevens team continue preparations for the upcoming IRB International Series in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Team Director Mike McCormack speaking with Kaieteur Sport on Saturday said that the current state of the field at the National Park is unfit for real training and efforts will be made to get the use of the National Stadium.
“The current state of the field due to the persistent inclement weather is causing immense frustration among the players and the coaching staff with players afraid to fully commit for fear of serious injury just ahead of departure for the tournament,” McCormack said.
He stated that the Rugby Union have no other choice, but to explore the possibility of getting approval to use the Stadium to complete preparations for the tournament.
The tournament which is scheduled to be played from February 12-13 is regarded as one of the premier Sevens competition that brings together the top nations in the format.
McCormack mentioned that if the team is not afforded the opportunity to practice at a venue that is conducive for full commitment and intensity of the players then they would have to go to the tournament with a great disadvantage.
“We have to practice the various patterns and presently we are unable to do so and with time not on our side then even the members on the selection panel will be placed in a difficult position to arrive at the final composition of the squad,” McCormack reasoned.
He added that in terms of commitment from the players, they are witnessing a large turnout at the sessions and huge sacrifices are being made by them, but at the moment the only problem seems to be the sub-standard facility.
Guyana is grouped with current leaders in the Series England, while France and Uruguay made up the other teams in the division.
According to McCormack, Guyana could ill-afford to go to Las Vegas with limited preparations since the aim ideally is to prove that this country belongs on that stage as CAC and NACRA champions.
The team which includes Claudius Butts, Walter George, Ryan Gonsalves, Leon Greaves, Cyon Kitt, Joseph Rahaman, Elwin Chase, Avery Corbin, Peabo Hamilton, Dane Parks, Jason Tyrell, Chris Singh, Troy Bascom, Claude Alexander, Vallon Adams, O’Neil Charles, Jermaine Prowell and Kevin Jordan continues to train under the watchful eyes of Coach Theodore Henry as they await the arrival of Technical Director Canadian Spencer Robinson at month’s end.
Manager of the squad is Robin Roberts, while the Physiotherapist is Arianne Mangar.
