Children’s Legal Aid Project handling fewer cases

Statistics from the Children’s Legal Aid Project has revealed that for last year, 73 children were interviewed relating to criminal offences and 38 for civil matters.
The figures represent a decrease when compared to 2009, which recorded 158 children interviewed for criminal offences and 138 for civil matters.
However, for both years, it was noted that assault recorded the highest number of interviews while Road Traffic Offences were minimal.
According to the Guyana Legal Aid, the purpose of the project, which was launched in September 2007, is to provide legal aid services directly to children (persons under 18) who need assistance with criminal and/or civil matters.
Children may approach the Clinic directly or be referred by government ministries and agencies, and NGOs that provide non-legal assistance to children, such as Help & Shelter and Red Thread.
Subject to sufficient resources, the Clinic, which operates during normal working hours, Monday to Friday, assists clients facing criminal charges and with most civil matters in the Court of Appeal, the High Court and most Magistrates’ Courts.
Children’s Legal Aid Project is under an agreement between the Clinic and the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport and is funded by UNICEF.
