President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo has accepted an invitation to become the patron of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) in a strategic move expected to validate the sport and give it more stakeholder support.
Following the election of Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene to head the GTTA, table tennis had enjoyed two fruitful quarters with the new Executive. The fruition of the period peaked with the association getting the support of the Head of State.
In a letter dated November 8, 2010, Confidential Secretary to the President, Yvonne Raghoo had written to inform the GTTA of Jagdeo’s decision to accept the invitation to be the patron of what is still a relatively newly constituted table tennis Executive.
“Dear Commissioner, I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter dated September 16, 2010 and addressed to His Excellency, President Bharrat Jagdeo”.
“I am pleased to inform you that His Excellency has indicated his acceptance of your invitation for him to become the patron of the GTTA,” the succinct two paragraphed letter, which Kaieteur Sport was privy to, stated.
Former First Lady and President, Janet Jagan had functioned as the last Patron of the GTTA, but during the lull as the association changed presidents before Greene, there was no patron, which is usually one of the fundamental offices of the association.
The patron authenticates and adds credence to the association. The GTTA has to now manage its affairs in a manner befitting the protocol of the Office of the President. The Head of State will be supporting the programmes of the association.
